The Australian Health Services Research Institute (AHSRI) opened on 20th May 2011. In 2006, the Centre for Health Service Development (CHSD) made a planned decision to begin a period of significant growth. Since that time, CHSD has expanded the range of disciplines in which it specialises and has established several sub-centres that focus on specific aspects of health services research and development.
A natural consequence of this growth is to expand CHSD’s organisational structure to reflect its ongoing success. The CHSD will continue as the arm of AHSRI that nurtures new research themes and programs. It will serve as the ‘generalist health and community’ research group doing strategic project-based research as an AHRSI ‘centre’. The seven other sub-centres focus on specific areas and also operate as research centres within the AHSRI structure. AHSRI will be comprised of the following eight research centres:
AHSRI operates within the faculty structure of the University of Wollongong, belonging to the Sydney Business School. The Institutes aims;
to improve the management and provision of health and community services in Australia by achieving greater equity in resource distribution, fairer access to services, better continuity within and across the health and community care sectors, and the use of evidence to assist management decision-making.
In addition to producing robust academic output, the products of the Institute include practical and expert advice to a variety of government and non-government agencies and interest groups.
